Airborne Survey

Global Vectra Helicorp Limited (GVHL) has been actively conducting low-altitude airborne geophysical surveys in coordination with the Atomic Minerals Directorate for Exploration and Research, Department of Atomic Research, Government of India, for exploration and research directly, and through Fugro Airborne Surveys, Canada and the National Geophysical Research Institute, Hyderabad. Today, GVHL is the sole helicopter company providing this kind of service in India.

At present, four state-of-the-art AS 350 B3 helicopters are actively engaged in conducting airborne surveys. These operations are being carried out across India, from Meghalaya in the northeast to Maharashtra in the west, and from Andhra Pradesh in the south to Rajasthan in the north. GVHL has its own pool of qualified and skilled pilots trained to international standards and its own engineering team to support the operations. 

 

GVHL has clocked approximately 2,000 accident-free hours of low-altitude airborne surveys in the last two years. It is expecting to complete another 1,000 hours of airborne survey in 2011.

The airborne geophysical survey is a process of measuring the variation in several key physical or geochemical parameters of the earth. The most important parameters measured are conductivity, magnetic susceptibility, density, and radioactive element concentration. These surveys lead to the detection or inference of various minerals, hydrocarbons, geothermal reservoirs, and geowater reservoirs. Any change in the earth’s near surface that causes a measurable change in these parameters presents a potential application for airborne geophysics.

Electromagnetic surveys map the three-dimensional variation in conductivity caused by changes in mineralogy, intensity of alteration, water content, or salinity.

Airborne magnetic surveys map the variation of the magnetic susceptibility, generally due to changes in the magnetite content of the rock. 

Gamma-ray spectrometric surveys measure the radiation of one or more of the natural radioelements: potassium, uranium, and thorium, or a specific man-made radioelement.
