The Amarnath cave shrine, dedicated to Shiva, contains an ice stalagmite that is worshipped as Shiva’s lingam by devotes. The cave is said to be more than 5,000 years old. It is situated in the Himalayas, at an altitude of 3,888 m (12,756 ft), about 141 km (88 miles) from Srinagar, the capital of Jammu and Kashmir.
According to legend, Parvati kept asking her husband, Shiva, for the secret of immortality. Finally, Shiva agreed to tell her. He looked for a place where no living being could overhear him as he imparted the secret to Parvati. He chose the Amarnath cave for this purpose. |

He left his bull, Nandi, at Pahalgam. He released the moon from his hair at Chandanwari, and the snakes at the banks of Lake Sheshnag. He left his son, Ganesh, at Mahagunas Parvat and the five Elements at Panchatarni, and then entered the Amarnath cave with Parvati. To ensure that no living being would be able to hear the secret, he created Rudra the Howler and ordered him to spread fire in and around the cave.
Shiva then disclosed the secret of immortality to Parvati and also narrated the story of the creation of the universe. By chance, an egg that lay beneath Shiva’s deer skin remained protected. A pair of doves born from this egg, having listened to the secret of immortality, achieved everlasting life. Many pilgrims have reported seeing a pair of doves when they visit the Amarnath cave to pay obeisance to Shiva before the ice lingam. |
